Pratt Munson’s 80-year history is significant for its long tradition of placing Foundation studies as the integral element that contributes to a successful art education. The Foundation core is a first-year prerequisite to the Fine Arts and Communications Design programs. Our intimate, upstate campus offers a remarkable 10:1 student-faculty ratio ensuring that students get the attention and guidance they need to move confidently into their selected art majors. Each student’s education is grounded in examining concepts, principles, craft, and the vast history of the visual arts.
The objective of the Foundation core is to develop and expand students' visual thinking through a critical examination and practice of methods and processes of creativity. Students move on to specialization in their sophomore year and utilize the skillsets established in their first-year curriculum.
The Pratt Munson campus also provides the opportunity for students to immerse themselves in a rich cultural environment through the renowned art collection and exhibitions at Munson’s Museum, enjoying movies by independent filmmakers in the Bank of Utica–Sinnott Family Auditorium, or going to concerts in the Root Court. In this setting, it becomes easy for students to thrive in the growth and understanding of their artistic contribution.
