New First-Year Students
Apply through the Common App at commonapp.org and select Pratt Munson in Utica. You can also apply to Pratt in Brooklyn at the same time. Did you already submit your application to Pratt-Brooklyn, but have decided you would also like to apply to Pratt Munson? Email apphelp@pratt.edu to activate your application for the Pratt Munson campus.
Transfer Applicants
The Pratt Munson campus is designed specifically for new first-year students and does not accept transfer applications. Students interested in transferring are encouraged to apply directly to Pratt Institute’s main campus in Brooklyn to continue their academic journey. Additional information about Pratt Institute’s transfer process and application can be found here.
How to Apply as a First-Year Student
- Access the Common App at commonapp.org.
- Create an account or log in on the CommonApp website, then navigate to your Dashboard.
- Click on the "College Search" tab and search for "Pratt Munson."
- Choose "Pratt Institute" from the options.
- Click "Add College" to add Pratt Institute to your "My Colleges" tab.
- Fill out the online application form, selecting the campus/campuses you want to apply to under the "Academics" section.
- Students will have the option to apply to one campus or multiple campuses.
- If applying only to Pratt Munson, select Pratt Munson (Extension Campus) and a program.
- Complete the rest of the application, ensuring that all required information is provided.
- CommonApp will notify you if anything is missing before you can submit your application.
For International Applicants
Am I an international student? You are considered an international student if you are a citizen of any country other than the United States. However, those who hold dual citizenship or are a permanent resident of the United States should apply as a domestic applicant, regardless of your country of residence. For those who are living in the U.S. in undocumented status, you will be reviewed as a domestic student, although you will not be eligible for Federal Aid. Citizenship or visa status does not factor into the admissions review – applicants are considered based on the materials submitted in their application.
International Students Applying to Pratt Munson
- To apply as an international student, complete your application using the Common App. Please make sure you use a credit card. The application sites do not accept international debit cards.
International Requirements
- International students follow the same application requirements as domestic applicants.
- Tests of English proficiency. All students for whom English is a second language must submit one of the following accepted exams:
- TOEFL and TOEFL Home Edition (the minimum score is 71 for 2-year programs)
- TOEFL ITP Plus (minimum 527 for 2-year programs)
- PTE (minimum 48 for 2-year programs)
- IELTS or IELTS Indicator (minimum 6.0 for 2-year programs)
- Cambridge English (the minimum score is 175 for 2-year programs). Pratt accepts C1 or C2 test results.
SAT or ACT (no minimum)
Pratt accepts the TOEFL My Best Score and super scores SAT and ACT tests. Scores must be received by our deadlines. Any test scores must have been taken within one year of submitting an application in order to be considered valid. Pratt no longer accepts Duolingo test scores as of August 1, 2022.
- English Proficiency Waivers
- International applicants who have studied at a high school in the U.S. for at least three years with academic success may waive the test requirement. Those who have studied in another country where English is an official national language and the mode of instruction may also waive the test requirement with official transcripts that demonstrate at least three full years of academic success.
- Pratt does NOT waive the test requirement for students who have attended an English-speaking school in a non-English speaking country unless the school is US accredited (e.g. American schools) or an English-speaking IB World school.
- If you intend to waive your score requirement, select this option on the Common App, and waivers will be issued after your application has been submitted and reviewed for eligibility. Waivers are issued at the discretion of the admissions office.
Preferred Names and Personal Information
- It’s important for international students who will go through a visa process and submit official documents to take extra care when including personal information in their application materials.
- A discrepancy between names, dates, or email addresses or other personal information can cause delays or mis-matching of documents during the application or visa process. It’s important that your information is consistent across all materials submitted.
- Things that can prevent us from matching your documents, portfolio or other materials to your file are:
- Special characters like hyphens, spaces, or accents
- Reversal of given and family names
- Reversal of month and day for your date of birth (In the US, dates are formatted as MM/DD/YYYY)
International Scholarships
- Pratt Munson considers international students for generous merit-based scholarships based on a comprehensive evaluation of their application materials. There is no separate application necessary for scholarship consideration. All international applicants who are admitted will be considered for a scholarship.
Application Requirements
Application form
First-year applicants apply online through the Common App.The application does include an administrative fee of $50 for U.S. citizens and permanent residents, and $90 for international applicants. Fee waivers can be requested through the Common App for students who qualify.
Official high school transcripts
Submit official transcripts from all high schools attended.Transcripts must be sent directly from your school through approved electronic services (CommonApp, SCOIR, Naviance, Parchment, BridgeU, EScript, Scrib, National Student Clearinghouse, or CIALFO). Transcripts submitted by the applicant are not accepted.
All final high school transcripts must include a signature from a designated school officer in order to be considered official.
A high school diploma or its equivalent is required for enrollment before the first day of class. Applicants with a GED must also submit official scores and transcripts from all high schools attended.
Official results of all external examinations are required if your school mandated it as part of your high school graduation requirements (e.g., GCSE, IB, A-levels, French Bac, etc.)
The Admissions Office may contact your school directly if any questions arise or if additional verification is needed.
Portfolio
A student’s portfolio is a collection of recent artwork that best showcases their creativity, interests, experiences, perspective, and potential. If you've been making art, you have a portfolio.Your portfolio offers a glimpse of who you are now and where you sit on your creative journey. Since everyone's journey is unique, every portfolio is unique. We look forward to seeing your work and getting to know you as a visual storyteller.
How do I submit my portfolio?
→ Portfolios must be submitted at www.pratt.slideroom.com
→ Slideroom has a $10 submission fee. We cannot waive this fee.
→ You must create a login using the same email address and biographical information that you used on your CommonApp
→ All images for your portfolio must be included in a single SlideRoom submission
→ Links or websites are not accepted as a portfolio
→ Once you submit your portfolio, it cannot be edited or returned except when the admissions committee may require additional portfolio work. In this instance, an admissions counselor will reach out to you with instructions.
What should I include in my portfolio?
There is no set formula for the perfect portfolio, and what to include will depend on the type of portfolio that you submit. There are certain basics, however, that we want to see in any portfolio that will assist our review process.
→ Recent Work: include work made within the last 18 months from the time you submit your portfolio. This timeframe will ensure that your portfolio reflects your current skills, interests, experiences, and abilities.
→ Presentation: present your work thoughtfully. When photographing or filming your work, pay attention to lighting, focus, and cropping. Avoid blurry, out-of-focus images, and distracting or busy backgrounds that are not part of the work.
→ Documentation: each artwork presented must include the media or materials used, the dimensions, and the year when you made it. A title and a description are not required, but you can include them if you prefer.
→ You: The portfolio you submit should reflect the person you want us to know. Show us who you are and show us what is important to you as a visual storyteller.
Pratt Essay
All Pratt Essay is required and should be 250-500 words or two pages maximum.Students should write about a piece of work (visual art, musical performance, piece of writing, architecture, or design) that has influenced them and describe the impact it has had on their perspective OR write about a piece of their own work and the impact that creating it has had on them.
- Proof of English Proficiency
International applicants and those for whom English is not the primary or native language, must submit a proof of English proficiency. The following are accepted:
→ TOEFL and TOEFL Home Edition - minimum score is 71 for Pratt Munson. Use submission code 2669.
→ DET Duolingo English Test
→ IELTS Academic - minimum score is 6.0 for Pratt Munson
→ PTE - minimum score is 48 for Pratt Munson
→ Cambridge English Proficiency - minimum score is 175 for Pratt Munson. We accept C1 or C2 levels.
All test scores must be sent directly to Pratt by the testing agency before the admissions deadline. Test scores must have been taken within two (2) years of your intended starting term (For Fall 2026, tests taken on or after August 2024 are accepted.
English Proficiency Waivers: International applicants may request an English proficiency waiver for one of the following reasons:
→ Applicants who have studied the last three (3) years of high school in the United States and are in → Applicants who have completed the last three (3) years of high school in another country where English is both an official national language and the primary language of instruction, and who are in good academic standing.
→ Applicants who have studied the last three (3) years at an English-speaking school in a non-English speaking country if the school is U.S. accredited or an English-speaking IB World school, and are in good academic standing.
English as Second Language programs or certificates are not accepted. Proficiency waivers are reviewed and approved at the discretion of the Admissions Office.
OPTIONAL
Letters of Recommendation
Letters of recommendation are optional, and opting not to include them will not put you at a disadvantage. For those who still wish to include letters, you should request them from someone with firsthand knowledge of your creative or academic preparedness. A maximum of three letters can be uploaded and submitted through the Common App.
SAT/ACT Scores
SAT or ACT scores are not required.
Applicants who wish to submit SAT or ACT scores can have the scores sent directly from the College Board to Pratt Institute.

Pratt asks that materials be uploaded to the online application whenever possible. Portfolios are submitted exclusively at pratt.slideroom.com.

Admissions Decisions
- Early action decisions will be sent at the end of December and the beginning of January.
- “Regular decision” admissions decisions are announced starting the last week in February and every subsequent week.
- Check your application status. After you’ve applied, you can check the status of your application anytime. Just log into the link above using your email address and the password you used when you applied. It’s important to note that it can take up to three weeks from the date we receive your materials for your checklist to update, so your status may have some delay.
